How this site is written
- Primary instruments first. Where a rule exists, the rule is the source. Legislation, regulations, regulator publications and resuscitation council guidelines, in that order of preference over commentary
- Status is stated next to the claim. Every requirement is marked as required by law or regulation, recommended in guidance, or dependent on your own circumstances. A recommendation is never presented as a legal requirement
- Absence is reported. Where a widely assumed requirement does not exist in the instrument, that is written down as a finding rather than skipped
- Unverified means excluded. If an instrument could not be opened and read, no claim is made about it. It goes on the list at the bottom of this page instead
- No clinical guidance. Nothing here tells anybody how to treat anybody. ANZCOR publishes that material free of charge

Limitations you should know about
Access problems during research
Several official sites refused automated access while this edition was compiled. Where that happened, the position was confirmed from the same body's own published documents rather than from commentary, and it is flagged here so that a reader can check it independently. The affected sources are the Safe Work Australia pages and the ACECQA site. Nothing in this edition rests on a source that could not be confirmed in some form.
Editions and currency
Instruments change, codes are reissued and approved lists are updated. Every page on this site carries the date its sources were last checked, and that date is the honest limit of what this site can tell you. It is not monitored continuously. If the date at the bottom of a page is old, treat the page as a starting point and open the source.
Jurisdiction
Where a national instrument is applied by each state and territory, the version in force where you operate governs. This is particularly true of the education and care national law and regulations. See states and territories.
This is not legal advice
This site describes what public instruments say. It cannot tell you how they apply to your organisation's facts, and it does not try to. Where a question turns on your circumstances, the pages say so and stop.
What is deliberately absent
The following were considered for this edition and are not covered, because the governing instrument was not opened and read. Their absence is not a finding that no requirement exists.
- School staff requirements set by state and territory education departments
- Occupational licensing conditions, including security, aquatic and outdoor recreation
- Mining, resources and maritime requirements, which sit with their own regulators
- Requirements attached to specific Commonwealth, state or philanthropic funding programs
- Individual state and national sporting organisation affiliation rules, which are numerous, differ by sport and change
- Any clinical guidance at all

Corrections to a factual claim are made as soon as they are confirmed against the instrument, and the checked date on the page is updated when they are.
Maintenance
This reference is reviewed twice a year. It is also reviewed on any of the following triggers, whichever comes first:
- A new edition of the model Code of Practice for first aid in the workplace, or of a jurisdiction's adopted code
- A change to the Education and Care Services National Regulations affecting regulation 136, or a change to an ACECQA approved list
- A revision of ANZCOR Guideline 10.1
- A jurisdiction adopting, amending or repealing work health and safety legislation
- A correction reported through the address above
Review means opening each instrument in the table and confirming or updating the checked date. A review that finds no change still updates the date, so that an old date always means the source has not been looked at recently.
